Riposte

Historical fencing as a conversation of tempo, distance and intention — not a fighting game. Two silhouettes on a chalked piste over a real measure-and-tempo model: an attack must be answered by a parry-riposte, a counter-attack only inside a preparation, and every exchange reads as a sentence — feint sixte, draw the parry, disengage under it, riposte. Ten treatise plates teach one action each against a provost who demonstrates then tests it; then six fencers who each lie to you differently. One thumb holds measure, the other the four named lines. Baroque strings, no dependencies.

Miasma

You are the quarantine council of a walled city in the plague year of 1348, and the sickness is already inside the walls. Each week you may seal a fixed number of orders: bar a street, open a pest house, lime the doors, hold the ships, shut the market, give out grain. Under the painted isometric city runs a real epidemic model, one per quarter, coupled by the traffic between them — and what is reported to you is always last week's truth. Close the market and the poor quarter starves. Each year ends in a chronicle naming the dead and the saved.

Interlock — A Signal Box, 1910

You are the signalman. An illuminated enamel diagram shows the road above; below stands a brass frame of fourteen painted levers, tied together underneath by iron — and that iron is the puzzle. A signal will not come off until the points beneath it lie right and their lock is bolted. Pull a lever the interlocking forbids and it thunks dead in your hand and names the lever in the way. Beyond the box there is only the block bell: 4 for an express, 3-1 for a passenger, 2 when a train enters the section. Twelve turns of duty, graded on punctuality, safety and protocol.

Aerostat

It is 1906 and you are standing in a wicker basket under two thousand cubic metres of hydrogen, flying for pure distance. There is no engine and no rudder — only what an aeronaut really had: pour sand to rise, open the valve to sink, trail the drag rope, and choose when to come down. Steering is altitude. The sky is stacked with wind streams running different ways at different heights, so every climb is a bet that the faster river up there is worth the sand it costs. Sun lifts you free by day; rain soaks the silk; a sea crossing is a commit point. Five stages, plus an endless record attempt.

Mudlark

London, 1890s. Twice a day the Thames pulls back and hands you two thousand years of lost property. Walk a hand-painted foreshore at low water, read the ground for a gleam or a dark crusted stain, and work it before the flood returns. Brush too fast and a pipe stem snaps; put iron on a Roman coin and you scar it forever. What you free comes up in the only true colour on a grey shore — name its era under the loupe while the mud is still on it and you earn its provenance, and the human accident that put it in the river. Eight tides, thirty-four researched finds, one cabinet museum.
