The Thorn Court

A mortal bard walks into a fae court with a lute and no invitation. A trick-taking card RPG played on a living illuminated manuscript: gold-leaf miniatures land on vellum with an ink bleed, a marginal beast uncurls to name the trump, and a won trick spirals into the gutter. Nine courtiers duel you, each with a custom that rewrites the hand — sworn ranks, cursed suits, a misere where the lowest leaf wins, a turning trump. Draft a sheaf from sixty leaves, spend three mortal favours, and choose the boons that decide which of three endings closes the book.

Majolica Wheel

Deruta, 1520. You are the apprentice in a majolica bottega. Patrons' letters arrive with commissions: throw each vessel on the kick-wheel against an inked profile, paint its pounced Deruta pattern in cobalt and copper while the wheel idles, then hold the kiln door and pull the pot the moment the glaze turns to glass. Thin walls fire fast and crack sooner. Sixteen letters from four patrons, six vessel families, ten patterns, handles, deadlines and a matched pair to finish; your shelf fills as they write back.

Wilding — Wildlife Rescue

Run a rural wildlife rescue centre across three seasons. Everything through the door is a real casualty: a swift grounded because it cannot take off from flat ground, a hedgehog too light to hibernate, a fledgling that was never orphaned, a barn owl with a fractured coracoid. The craft is examination and judgement. Weigh it, palpate it, radiograph it if the tin will stretch, and name only what your own findings support. Then decide the hard thing: whether it can ever go back out. Some cannot, and the game says so. Seventeen authored cases, seven cages, eight hours a day.

Miasma

You are the quarantine council of a walled city in the plague year of 1348, and the sickness is already inside the walls. Each week you may seal a fixed number of orders: bar a street, open a pest house, lime the doors, hold the ships, shut the market, give out grain. Under the painted isometric city runs a real epidemic model, one per quarter, coupled by the traffic between them — and what is reported to you is always last week's truth. Close the market and the poor quarter starves. Each year ends in a chronicle naming the dead and the saved.

Honbasho

You are a nineteen-year-old rikishi with a new ring name and the bottom line of the banzuke. Sumo as a contact sport of weight and balance, not combo strings: read your opponent at the shikiri line, commit to a charge, and the tachi-ai lands in a burst of salt and clay. What follows is a live struggle for one centre of gravity — shove, pull, work him toward the straw. Every finish is a real kimarite, named and called. Fifteen bouts decide each of six tournaments, and the banzuke is rewritten around your name.

Drystone

On a northern English fell the walls are down, and there is no mortar coming. Drystone is a physics game about fitting irregular hand-inked stones: no grid, no snapping, no two alike — only weight, friction and the judgement in your fingers. Break every joint one over two, pour hearting into the core, tie the faces with through-stones, set the copes. Then let go. The years run: gales lean on exposed stone, frost prises at every lazy joint, the ground settles under a hollow core, and Herdwick ewes shoulder her to see if she gives. Eleven commissions. Longevity is the only score.

Aerostat

It is 1906 and you are standing in a wicker basket under two thousand cubic metres of hydrogen, flying for pure distance. There is no engine and no rudder — only what an aeronaut really had: pour sand to rise, open the valve to sink, trail the drag rope, and choose when to come down. Steering is altitude. The sky is stacked with wind streams running different ways at different heights, so every climb is a bet that the faster river up there is worth the sand it costs. Sun lifts you free by day; rain soaks the silk; a sea crossing is a commit point. Five stages, plus an endless record attempt.

Queenright

Aunt June left you one colony, a cedar shed and a notebook. Queenright is a beekeeping game about the one skill that matters: reading comb. Smoke the door, lift the roof and drag a top bar up until the screen fills with living wax — solid arcs of sealed brood from a queen in her prime, pepperpot holes from one that is failing, and the sealed queen cell you learn to dread. Underneath runs an honest colony model: brood pipelines, swarm pressure, varroa, and stores a February cold snap can empty in a week. Super, split, requeen, feed and heft for winter. The almanac remembers what killed what.

Mudlark

London, 1890s. Twice a day the Thames pulls back and hands you two thousand years of lost property. Walk a hand-painted foreshore at low water, read the ground for a gleam or a dark crusted stain, and work it before the flood returns. Brush too fast and a pipe stem snaps; put iron on a Roman coin and you scar it forever. What you free comes up in the only true colour on a grey shore — name its era under the loupe while the mud is still on it and you earn its provenance, and the human accident that put it in the river. Eight tides, thirty-four researched finds, one cabinet museum.

HEDGE

Walk a hand-painted topiary maze in first person and draw your own map. The garden is bigger inside than the wall around it — five times over — and your notebook is the only thing that can prove it.
